LAW SCHOOL REVIEW: NEF LAW COLLEGE GUWAHATI, ASSAM
· Brief Introduction:
NEF Law College stands for National Education Foundation Law College, established in the year 2006, located at the heart of Guwahati city is one of the best institutions of the North-Eastern India which is set up in uniformity with other reputed National and International Law Colleges. The college stands to fulfil the long standing need and dream of a’ Law College of Excellence’ in this part of the country. It is also promoted by NEF Trust, which is a pioneering organization in the North-Eastern region engaged in popularizing the professional knowledge and developing the spirit of creativeness and competitiveness so that one could excel and face challenges with utmost confidence.
The institution is situated in the area of GMC Hostel Road, Anand Nagar GMC Opp. St. John`s Hospital, Christian Basti, Guwahati-5, Assam.
· Official Website:
A. Campus: Though the campus is not large enough still it is spread across 5 floors whereby the Principal office, Administrative section, one of the Teacher`s Common room and the cash counter is situated at the first floor while the rest of the floors consist of semester wise classrooms, IT lab, Moot Court Room and a Seminar Hall with well equipped furniture and other ancillary facilities. Two-three washroom units are also situated in the first and the second floor with adequate lighting and washing facility. An elevator is there in the campus with a facility to carry maximum 6 people at a time. Even the parking facility is also provided; still a lot of expansion is required therein.
B. Library: The College has a Digital Library which is well constructed with proper infrastructure, having adequate Wi-Fi facility and overall Air conditioned. Also the subject wise books, journals, newspapers and question papers are chronologically maintained that makes convenient for students as well as for the teachers to get the things.
· Academics and Faculty:
The College provides Five Years Integrated Courses in three streams i.e. BA/BBA/B.COM LLB (Hons), as well as Three Years LLB and Masters of Law Programme designed under Gauhati University. The College is duly approved by Bar Council of India (BCI), New Delhi, recognised by University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) of UGC Act, 1956 and Deptt. Of Higher Education, Govt. of Assam. Each academic year is divided into two semesters having 100 working days on an average. The term begins from August to December and February to June. The Honours subject is available from the Third semester onwards.
The faculty of this college constitutes mainly female teachers except two male teachers. The faculty consists of teachers from different backgrounds having a good command and a deep knowledge about each and every subject they dealt with respectively. On every occasion, whether academically or culturally, they always stand out beyond expectation of the students who help them out in whatever manner they could possibly do.
· Administration and fee structure:
The administration is efficient and strictly bound by the rules and procedures framed by the University. Though they are professional but sometimes it becomes tedious to get the small things done within a short span of time. The fee structure is quite nominal and affordable despite it depends upon person to person according to one`s own financial restraint, though one could refer the site for the same.
The cafeteria of the college is situated at the back end of the building, having necessary quick bites menu with an affordable price structure, still a lot of expansion and renovation is required as it is not spacious enough.
· Student Culture and Activities:
Various cultural and academic related activities take place in the college such as Seminars, Moot Court Competitions, Debates, Legal exhibition, and celebration of National Law day, Farewell, Fresher’s, Teachers Day and other incidental activities.
· Placement Cell:
In reality, the Placement cell of the college is still under construction but despite of such scenario, students work hard enough to get them apprised of good internships availability among various firms and other law sectors and endeavour their best to grab the opportunity.
· Best Thing:
The best thing about the college is that the faculty is always on their toe to help us and support the students in the best possible manner and also make sure that at the end we score well in our academics and also excel exceptionally in various other academic related activities.
Recently in April-2019, the college has been ranked 5th Top Law Institute in India (except National Law Universities) by “Civil Services Chronicle” Magazine and even many such accolades have been given to the college in the past years which one could see by visiting to the website under the head ‘News & Events’.
· Worst Thing:
The most disappointing thing about this college is first of all its campus should be expanded more and secondly the status of the placement cell is the concern of every student which must be taken into due consideration by the authorities at the earliest.
· Any other:
Although the college is trying to upgrade itself in each and every corner as required by each passing year, but the Seminar hall of the college also requires expansion since the capacity of the same as compared to the number of students is disproportionate. Even, the library of the college is digitally sound but still there is no access to Manupatra, SCC Online or other reputed legal database due to which students find difficulty in doing their research work especially if the college is participating in Moot Court Competitions across the country.
