Brief Introduction


Aligarh Muslim University, earlier known as Muhammadan-Anglo Oriental College, is a Central University in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. It was established in 1875 by Sir Syed Ahmed Khan. It has three off-campus centres in Malappuram (Kerala), AMU Murshidabad centre (West Bengal), and Kishanganj Centre (Bihar).

The Department of Law has been ranked at 6th position in terms of academic and research Excellence, among the Indian Law Universities. The Faculty of Law is presently running 5-year B.A.LL.B. (Integrated) Course, 2 years LL.M. Course along with 3 P.G. Diploma Courses in various specializations.

Location:

Faculty of law was earlier situated at Sir Syed Hall which was later on shifted to the present commerce faculty. At present the faculty is situated at Qila road building of the university.

Law Faculty Building

Faculty of law was earlier situated at Sir Syed Hall, later to shifted to the present commerce faculty. At present the faculty is situated at Qila road building of the university. The building is located outside the main campus and near the Aligarh Fort, at the outskirts of the city.

Seminar Library

Seminar law library is the oldest seminar library of the faculty. It has journals and books dating back to 19th century. It has approximately 35000 books including text books, reference books and research books apart from 35 National Journals and 15 International Journals. In a nutshell, it contains everything of all your needs.


Legal Aid Clinic and Mediation Centre

Faculty maintains this centre to provide legal guidance and advisement to indigent and poverty ridden litigants by associating students under the supervision and guidance of committed law teachers together with local judiciary.

Hostel Facility:


The Hall is situated outside the main campus of the University on Baraula By Pass .The students residing in the Hall are from the Faculty of Law, Faculty of Social Science, Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Commerce, etc. The Hall consists of four Hostels and one Annexe. The Annexe, is located besides the Faculty of Law, Qila Road Aligarh.

The Dining Hall Common Room, Reading Room Games Facility are available in the Hall. Since the hall is outside the main campus there is no source of refreshments. However, nearby, there is Aligarh Fort, where you can go with your friends and spend some time. The halls are Wi-Fi-enabled with subscriptions of premium websites like Manupatra, Lexis Nexis, Jstor etc.

Fee structure:


The fees are nominal. For an external candidate, course fees are approx. 15000 rupees per annum, in contrast to that for an internal candidate, course fees are approx. 12000 rupees per annum. In subsequent years, the charges are reduced down to around 8000 rupees per annum.

The mess charges are 1100 rupees per month.

Cafeteria:

There is no so-called canteen in the premises of Law Department. However, there is a central Canteen behind the Maulana Azad Library, providing quality food at cheaper prices.

Student Culture and activities: Law Society


The Law Society is a non-profit student organization. It has long traditional character which always uplifts the students' participation and performance in relation to legal affairs in different arena. The Dean, Faculty of Law is the President of the Society. The main task of the Law Society is to assist students within the Department of Law with all aspects of their study. Networking with legal professional forms an important part of work in building a presence for Aligarh Muslim University Law graduates with the legal profession. The society organizes events, both academic and social, from annual fest to freshers social and farewell party for final year students.

Best Thing:


The best thing about the department is the access to the Law seminar Library. It provides you all that stuff that are necessary for your preparation for the competitive examinations like Judiciary and Civil Services, Subscription of premium websites like Lexis Nexis, and all that you need for Legal Research. Seniors are quite good.

Worst Thing:


It does not offer any placement. Everything is self-paced. All you have to do it by yourselves.
