HOW DO YOU SEE A LAWYER FITTING INTO THE DEVELOPMENT SECTOR &CONTRIBUTE HIS BIT TOWARD SOCIETY

Usually,itisbelievedthatalegalprofessionislimitedonlytotakingupoflegalcases andalawyerpursuinglawisrequiredtorevolvearoundthecourtroomsonly.Butwith recentdevelopmentsintheprofessionoflaw,thelimitedvicinityofthisfieldhas widenedandpresently,lawyersareopentomanyareasdealingwithcorporateissues& socio-legalissues.Beingchosenthisprofession,Icanverywellunderstandthefactthat alawyerisnotonlyrequiredtofitinasituationdealingwiththelegalmatters,ratherhe/ sheisalsorequiredtoparticipateactivelyinsocialwelfareactivitiesandworkforthe socialcausebycoordinatingwiththeNGO’sorwithyourfoundationwhoundertakes projectsonfourmajorcoreareas. Alawyerisamancladinblack&whiteattirewalkinginacourtroom onwhom eyesof thevictim turnswithhopeandreliefthathewillprovidehim withjusticeandwouldnot letanythingwronghappentohim. TheHonorableSupremeCourtofIndiasafeguardsourconstitutionalrights.Inrecent times,thedevelopmentsectorisverybadlyhitbycorruption,violationofHumanRights andFundamentalRights1guaranteedbyourConstitutionbecauseofwhichpeopleof oursocietyhastofacemanycomplications. Oneofthecomplicationsinthedevelopmentsectorisviolationoftheconstitutional rightsofpeoplewhichcanberesolvedbyalawyeronly.Alawyer’scontributiontothe developmentsectorincludesprotectionoftherightsofthosepeoplewhoaresocially backwardoreducationallybackwardorfinanciallyunstabletofightfortheirownjustice. “Aperson’srightistheliabilityoftheotherpersontoprotect.” AccordingtoourConstitution,“Equalsshouldbetreatedequallybutunequalscannotbe treatedequally”.2Thedevelopmentsectoristheonewhereequalstatusofanindividual issometimesquestionableoramatterinissue.Therearevariouslegal&socio-legal 1PartIIIofIndianConstitution 2RighttoequalityunderArticle14ofIndianConstitution 2 issuesprevailinginthedevelopmentsectorwhichcanbetackledbyalawyeronly,for thewelfareofthepeopleofthissectorwhoarealsoapartofoursociety. Societiesareformedbysocialgroupingsanditiswellsettledbeliefthatsocietiesare notonlyformedbythehighsocietyrichpeopleortheprivilegedpeopleratherthe sociallybackwardpeoplealsoformsthemajorpartofoursocietywhoarebasically neglected.Lawyersarealwayswillingtoworkforthewelfareofoursociety.Ihaveto mention aboutNationalLegalServices Authority (NALSA),State LegalServices Authority (SALSA)and DistrictLegalServices Authority (DALSA)which are the authoritiesunderlawaimingtoprovidefreelegalaidtovariousunderprivilegedpeople orfinanciallyweakpeople.Deeplegalknowledgeandlegalskillsareneededto eradicatepoverty&promotedevelopmentinthedevelopmentsectorswhichcanbe doneonlybyalegalpractitioner. “Weneedwriterstowriteaboutsocialissuestospreadawarenessamongthepeople.” “Weneedengineerswhocontributetotechnological&industrialprogress.” “Weneeddoctorstoprovidehealthcaretopeople.” Butmostimportantly, “Weneedlawyerswhodealwithsocialprioritiesandseektoredresspeopleincaseof infringementofrights.” ‘Ruleoflaw’anda‘concretelegalsystem’isthebaseforsustaineddevelopment.These twofactorsarealsoresponsibleforeconomicalandsocialdevelopment.It’sthe Attorneyswhogiveanindividualasenseofsecuritytopursuetheirlifegoals.Theyare theoneswhorepresentanindividualoracorporatefirm intrialsandfightsfortheir justice.Someoftherenownedadvocateswhoarenolessthancelebritieshavefought forthejusticeofpeoplewithforteeitherincriminallaworcivillawareRamJethmalani, FaliNariman,KKVenugopal,GopalSubramaniam,P.Chidambaram andmanymore whosecontributionstoourIndiansocietyismarvelous. Thecontributionofalawyertowardsthesocietyalsostepsbackinthemid80’sandit 3 doesfindaplaceinourIndianhistory.IntheaftermathoffirstwarofIndependenceand formationofIndianNationalCongressin1885,anewerabegin.Theerahadmoderates likeDadabhaiNaorojiandSundernathBannerjeewhileMadanMohanMalviyaand MotilalNehru,amongstothers,whowereimportantmoderateleaders,andwhowere lawyers by profession. These moderates believed in the system of constitutionalism.Therefore“LawyersarethefootsoldiersofourConstitution”.Hence, IbelievethathiscontributiontowardsourIndiansocietyisunmatchable
